Well today was the day for the mother of all rides. Let’s see if I learned anything from my major bonk the last time I tired this ride. I ate well last night, I got to bed fairly early, and I had a good breakfast this morning. Let’s see if it worked.
I started with the usual warm up to city creek. I forgot that today was an even day and the canyon was closed to bikes. So I added a little by going to the end of the loop and around the capitol building. It’s fairly close to the same mileage without the elevation gain.
Over to emigration. What a great day it was today perfect weather for a long ride. Emigration wasn’t too bad and I made it up and over to I-80. I-80 sucked like it always does but that’s part of the deal if you want to do this ride. I guess you could ride back down emigration if you wanted but that would add a lot of miles,
Mill creek was nice and cool. I was getting towards the top and the road started to get a little icy. There were a few sections of ice but you could pick your way through ok. It keep getting worse the higher I went and finally…..whooops! Down I went. I figured I had enough riding in front of me so I decided to cut it short about two miles from the top.
I didn’t make it to my spring up Mill Creek so I hit the 7-11 at the mouth of Big Cottonwood. A quick Gatorade and a Kit-Kat and I was back on my bike. Big was good today sunny but not very hot. I cruised the stairs and the s-curves and finally made it to the turnaround at Brighton. One canyon to go!
Up to Little Cottonwood. I was not looking forward to this one. Little is by far the steepest canyon around and by the time I got to the mouth I was at mile 85 or so. I was in granny pretty much the whole way and standing most of the time. I almost talked myself into quitting when I got to Snowbird but the little man in my head would have none of that(I have a little man in my head that eggs me on to do stupid and/or crazy shit). So I finally made it to the top of the road, near Alta, and I felt like I had done good. Another quick stop at Snowbird to fill up water again and it was back to home.
I feel great about my ride. I didn’t lay down the fastest time but this is a hard, long, steep ride. Just finishing it is an accomplishment. Here is a link: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ut/salt-lake-city/798369277904 It’s basically the same ride I did today with a little less elevation gain. If I can pull this one off I can do anything.
